08.07.2016: Am Nachmittag geht's los. Wir machen uns auf den Weg nach Feldkirch.

July 8th, 2016: In the afternoon we start our journey by riding to Feldkirch (A).

Das Motorrad mit tiefgestellter Frontscheibe und den Kopf auf den Tank gedrückt auf den Bahnwagen verladen. Die Höhe ist sehr knapp bemessen.

The wind shield in its lowest position and the head down on the tank for loading the bike on the trailer. This is a very narrow stace.

Die Nacht verbringen wir im Autozug nach Wien in einem komfortablen 2-er-Abteil. Das Frühstück ist auch okay.

The night we spend in the car-carrying train to Vienna in a comfortable two bed cabin. The breakfast served is quite okay.

Nach der Ausfahrt aus dem Bahnhof suchen wir die Autobahn Richtung Norden und los geht's.

After leaving the train terminal we're looking for the motorway toward north and off we go.

09.07.2016: Wir fahren durch die tschechische Republik via Brünn und Ostrava nach Warschau in Polen.

July 9th, 2016: We rid through the Czech Republic via Brno and Ostrava to Warsaw in Poland.

Und schon sind wir hinter den ehemaligen Eisernen Vorhang.

Now we are already behind the former Iron Curtain.

Blick aus unserem Hotelzimmer: überall Polizei, Fahrzeuge mit Sirene und Hubschrauber sind auch dauernd in der Luft: NATO- Gipfeltreffen (Obama ist auch hier).

View from our hotel room: everywhere Police, vehicules with sirenes and helicopters are in the air permanentely too: NATO-summit (Obama is here too).

Trotz den Einschränkungen im Strassenverkehr können wir uns Warschau zu Fuss unbehindert ansehen.

In spite of the security measures regarding traffic there was no limitation to explore Warsaw on foot.

Die Altstadt wurde nach der Zerstörung durch den 2. Weltkrieg wieder aufgebaut.

The old town has been restored after it was destroyed during World War II.

11.07.2016: Von Warschau in Polen nach Vilnius (oder Wilna) in Litauen. Dazu müssen wir Weissrussland umfahren, da unser Visum dort nur eine Einreise zulässt.

July 11th, 2016: From Warsaw in Poland to Vilnius in Lathuania. We must avoid Belarus because our visa allows only one entry there.

... und natürlich Regen, zeitweise auch richtig heftig. Es scheint, dass für die Reisetage Regen angesagt ist, während es für die Stadtbesichtigungen trocken bleibt.

... and rain, of course, sometimes even quite heavy. It seems on our days of travel there is always rain while for those days we do our city excursions it stays dry.

Wir geniessen den Aufenthalt in der Hauptstadt Vilnius.

We enjoy our stay at the capital Vilnius.

Es scheint fast mehr Kirchen als Einwohner zu geben.

It seem to have more churches than inhabitants.

July 13th, 2016: From Vilnius in Lathuania to Riga in Latvia.

As usual!

Hier lässt es sich leben. Riga, die alte Hansestadt und Hauptstadt Lettlands gefällt uns ausgezeichnet.

Here we could imagine to live. Riga an old Hanseatic town and capital city of Latvia is a excellent place to be.

Ausser ein paar stockbesoffenen Russen, die mich gleich in die nächste Bar mitnehmen wollten, war noch niemand unterwegs.

Except for a few heavely drunk Russian who wanted to take me with them to the next bar nobody was around.

Am Tag hat es dann etwas mehr Menschen, die diese entspannte Stadt geniessen.

During the day there are a few more people enjoying this relaxed city.

Der russische Einfluss kann nicht verleugnet werden.

The Russian influence cannot be denied.

15.07.2016: Von Riga in Lettland nach Tallinn in Estland.

July 15th, 2016: From Riga in Latvia to Tallinn in Estonia.

Auch in Tallinn, der Hauptstadt Estlands lässt es sich gut leben. Es ist nichts mehr vom verstaubten Soviet-Kommunismus zu spühren.

In Tallinn the capital of Estonia it's very nice to live too. Nothing left from the fusty Soviet communism.

17.07.2016: Von Tallinn in Estland nach St. Petersburg in Russland mit Grenzübertritt in Narva.

July 17th, 2016: From Tallinn in Estonia to St. Petersburg in Russia with border crossing at Narva.

EU-Aussengrenze. Wir verlassen den Schengen-Raum. Das bedeutet einen komplizierten und langwierigen Grenzübertritt. Obwohl alle Papiere korrekt und vollständig sind und wir uns per Internet angemeldet und einen Slot (Übertrittszeitfenster) reseviert haben, dauert es mehr als drei Stunden, bis die Einreise nach Russland geschafft ist.

EU-frontier. We leave the Schengen area. This means a complicated and lengthy border crossing. Even though all our papers are correct and complete and we had registered via internet and reserved a crossing slot it took us more than three hours to enter Russia.

Das ländliche Russland wirkt ärmlich und ohne Perspektive für junge Leute.

The countryside in Russia appears to be poor and without a future for the young people.

Das kann man von St. Petersburg nicht behaupten. Was für eine Stadt! Die frühere Haupstadt Russlands ist atemberaubend schön und protzt geradezu mit ihrem Reichtum.

This cannot be said about St. Petersburg. What a city! The former capital of Russia is stunningly beautiful und really shows off its wealth.

21.07.2016: Von St. Petersburg nach Wyschni Wolotschok.

July 21st, 2016: From St. Petersburg to Vyshny Volochyok.

Der einzige Grund, um in Wyschni Wolotschok Halt zu machen, war die zu grosse Distanz zwischen St. Petersburg und Moskau.

The only reason to stop at Vyshny Volochyok was the huge distance between St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Mit zeitweise so starkem Regen, dass das Fahren fast unmöglich wurde.

At times with such a downpour that riding was almost impossible.

Moskau, die Hauptstadt Russlands. Basilikus Kathedrale am roten Platz. Zwischen den beiden Bildern liegen nicht einmal 10 Minuten. Das Wetter ändert sehr schnell.

Flach, geradeaus und langweilig.

Flat, straight, and boring.

Smolensk: Eine kleinere Grenzstadt mit riesiger Festungsanlage (Kreml) auf dem Weg Richtung Westen kurz vor der Grenze zu Weissrussland.

Smolensk: A smaller border town with a huge fortress (Kremlin) towards west shortly before the border to Belarus.

26.07.2016: Von Smolensk geradeaus und eben nach Minsk.

July 26th, 2016: From Smolensk straight and level to Minsk.

Minsk: Hauptstadt von Weissrussland. So stelle ich mir die Sovietunion vor.

Minsk: Capital of Belarus. That's how I imagine the Soviet Union.

27.07.2016: Von Minsk nach Lublin in Polen.

July 27th, 2016: From Minsk to Lublin in Poland.

Lublin: nach einem weiteren langwierigen Grenzübertritt zwischen Weissrussland und Polen sind wir zurück in der westlichen Welt.

Lublin: after yet another time consuming border crossing between Belarus and Poland we're back in the Western world.

Eine entspannte Kleinstadt mit mit einem gewissen Investitionsbedarf.

A relaxed small town with quite a few investment needs.

28.07.2016: Von Lublin nach Krakau, der alten Hauptstadt Polens.

July 28th, 2016: From Lublin to Krakow Poland's old captial.

Endlich wenigstens wieder ein paar Kurven.

Finally there are at least some curves.

Erneutes Pech mit einer offiziellen Veranstaltung. Der Papst ist in der Stadt für den katholischen Weltjugendtag, eingeführt von Johannes Paul II, der aus dieser Stadt stammte.

Again bad luck with an official event. The Pope is in town for the catholic world youth day which has been invented by John Paul II who came from here.
