Xi'an, die Hauptstadt der Provinz Shaanxi, ist 1974 weltweit bekannt geworden durch die Entdeckung des Mausoleums und der diesem vorgelagerten Terracotta-Armee von Qin Shihuangdi (259 - 210 v.Chr), dem 1. Kaiser Chinas und Begründer der Qin-Dynastie. Xi'an hat aber viel mehr zu bieten, als "nur" die Terracotta-Armee.

Xi'an, the capital city of Shaanxi province became famous in 1974 after the discovery of the mausoleum of Qin Shihuangdi (259 - 210 BC) and the Terracotta Army in front of it. Qin Shihuangdi was the first emperor of China and the founder of Qin Dynasty. But Xi'an has much more to offer than "just" the Terracotta Army.

Chang'an, wie Xi'an früher hiess, war zu seiner Blütezeit mit mehr als einer Million Einwohner die grösste Stadt der Welt. Heute leben ca. 9 Millionen in Xi'an.

Chang'an as Xi'an was named in old times was the biggest city in the world with a population of 1 million people. Today about 9 million call Xi'an their home.

Die Stadtmauer ist gewaltig: 12 Meter hoch, 15 - 18 Meter breit, auf der gesamten Länge von etwa 13.6 Kilometern.

The city wall is huge: 40 feet high, 50 - 60 feet wide and has a total length of about 8.5 miles.

Wachttürme gab es alle 120 Meter, so dass die Bogenschützen jede Position treffen konnten. Einige der Wachttürme sind jedoch nicht mehr vorhanden.

Watchtowers were built every 400 feet to enable the archers to reach every point at the wall. Some of the towers are not there anymore.

Wir sind die Mauer komplett abgelaufen. Bis wir wieder zurück im Hotel waren, hatten wir 19 Kilometer in den Beinen.

We walked the wall completely. Until we were back at the hotel we had walked 12 miles.

Die Grosse Wildganspagode wurde 652 während der Tang Dynastie erbaut und mehrmals verändert oder renoviert. Ihr Hauptzweck war die Aufbewahrung von aus dem Sanskrit ins Chinesische übersetzten bhuddistischen Schriften.

The Giant (or Big) Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 during the Tang Dynasty and has been altered or renovated a number of times. The main purpose was the storage of Buddhist scriptures translated from Sanskrit into Chinese.

Die Pagode befindet sich im Areal der Daci'en Tempels (Kloster der grossen Wohltätigkeit). Die Aufgabe der Mönche war das Übersetzen von religiösen Schriften.

The pagoda is at the Daci'en temple complex (Monastry of Great Benefacation). The main task of the monks here was translating scriptures.

Xi'an, als Ausgangspunkt der Seidenstrasse, hatte früh Kontakt zum westlichen Ausland und damit auch zu den Händlern aus arabischen Ländern, die den Islam nach China brachten.

Xi'an as the eastern end of the silk road had relations to foreign counties in the west in early times and with it to the merchants from the Arabic countries who brought Islam to China.

Etwa 80'000 Moslems leben in Xi'an, hautsächlich im Moslem Quarter innerhalb der Stadtmauer, welches ein beliebtes Ausgehziel ist. Überall gibt es Lebensmittelstände.

About 80'000 Moslems live in Xi'an, mostly in the Moslem Quarter inside the city wall. It is a popular destination in the city. There are food stands everywhere.

Besonders am Abend sind hier sehr viele Leute unterwegs. Oft wird es schwierig durchzukommen.

Especially at night many people are on the road hier. It can get very difficult to move.

Wer Xi'an sagt, meint in erster Linie die Terracotta-Armee. Obwohl erst 1974 entdeckt, ist sie heute das weltweit Bekanneste, was es in Xi'an gibt.

If somebody says Xi'an, she or he means first and foremost the Terracotta-Army. Discovered as late as 1974 today it is the most wellknown fact about Xi'an.

Beeindruckend in welcher Vielfalt und Detailtreue die unzähligen Figuren aus gebranntem Lehm hergestellt wurden, und dies mehr als 200 Jahre v.Ch.

It's very impressive in how many forms and with how much details the countless figures have been created more than 200 years BC.

Viele Figuren wurden zerstört und mussten in mühsamer Kleinarbeit aus vielen Einzelteilen zusammengesetzt werden.

Many figures had been destroyed and had to be painstakingly pieced together again.
