Harbin wurde in den letzten Jahren weit über Chinas Grenzen hinaus bekannt wegen dem jährlich stattfindenden Eis- und Schneeskulpturenfestival.

During the last few years Harbin has become famous beyond China's border for its yearly Ice- and Snow-Sculpture Festival.

Kalt genug ist es hier für ein solches Festival: während unseres Besuchs hier kletterte das Thermometer nie über -20°C.

Das zeigt sich nicht nur in der russisch-orthodoxen Sophien-Kathedrale (heute ein Geschichtsmuseum), sondern auch in vielen anderen älteren Gebäuden.

Harbin kennt einen strengen und langen Winter. Der zugefrorene Fluss Songhuajiang wird für viele Winteraktivitäten genutzt.

Aber auch moderne Gebäude gibt es hier: das als Schneeverwehung gebaute Opernhaus (Grand Theater).
